For a man whose parents, date of birth and wives names are unknown Monk Estill has earned his way into the record books, for the sheer fact that he is in them. 
Monk Estill was a very resourceful man. Born sometime in the late 1700's and died in 1835. A slave of Captain James Estill, Monk was a "respected" slave.
In 1770 Monk and Captain Estill came to Kentucky. He was there 9 years before finally making his splash on the state. 1779 he was sent by 

Biography
James Estill to run an apple orchard in Boonsborough Kentucky. The orchard had great success. ​ ​Sometime during Monks stay at the orchard he and his unknown wife had their first son,Jerry who was the first African American born in Boonsborough, Ky.
Monk Estill's t​rue fame comes from his assistance in the battle of little mountain or Estill's Fall. This moment ensured his fame and acquired him his freedom. ​This made Monk Estill the first freed Slave in Kentucky.
