Monk Estill was a very talented man according to his tales. The initial demonstration of his skill was with the Apple orchard in Boonsborough, Ky. He was put in charge of the entire Orchard and entrusted with it. This is a large task for any man and a huge responsibility. As you know the orchard succeeded and was praised by the town.
Beyond the simple task of running an orchard Monk was one few men who could make gunpowder. The process in itself was quite complex.  The powder was hard to make requiring one to run water through guano and boil it. After the boiling is done you would be left with crystals. The crystals were powdered and mixed with willow charcoal and sulfur. Then it is again boiled until the minerals mix. The mixture is finally dried. The ingredients are a 6:1:1 ration of saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal in that order. Other than these great talents he was known to be a great marksman, hunter and fiddler. Monk was simply an inspiring individual.
